DS3 petrol: character, DS3 diesel: endurance — two engines with opposite weaknesses

On the DS3, produced from 2010 to 2019, the symptoms that lead to engine replacement differ depending on whether you drive a petrol or a diesel. The 1.6 THP (EP6FDT / EP6DTS) is the most commonly affected unit: premature timing chain stretch, abnormal oil consumption due to piston ring wear, and a cylinder head prone to overheating are well-known weaknesses of this Prince family engine, shared with BMW. The result is often internal failure or a warped cylinder head that makes the engine beyond repair without a full block replacement. The 1.6 HDi (codes T3DA, T3DB, T1WA, T1WB, T1DA, T1BB, NGDA, NGDB) has a different profile: more durable over the long term, it can nevertheless suffer from severe sludging of the lubrication circuit at high mileages, which weakens the bearings.

Five engines, twenty-three engine codes: the right identification reference

The DS3 was fitted with five engines — 1.2 PureTech, 1.4 VTi, 1.6 VTi, 1.6 THP and 1.6 HDi — but the engine capacity code alone is not enough to identify the correct unit. The 1.2 PureTech alone covers codes EB2ADT_HNP, EB2ADTX_HNN, EB2DT_HNZ and EB2DTS, which correspond to different power outputs and production years. The 1.4 VTi comes in codes 8FN, 8FP, 8FR, 8F01, HM01 and HN01. Before placing any order, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference: two DS3s with the same engine capacity and the same model year can carry incompatible blocks depending on their trim level or market destination.

Bare engine: what's included and what's not

All blocks available on this page are supplied as a bare engine: this means a reconditioned short engine without ancillaries (turbo, fuel injection system, alternator, starter motor). The ancillary components from the original engine should be reused or replaced separately during fitting. This is a point to factor into the cost of the job, particularly on the 1.6 THP, where the turbo and fuel rail are frequently worn at the same time as the block.
