The Berlingo works hard: 9 engine variants, just as many different turbos — don't mix them up

A van or leisure activity vehicle that goes through load after load, cold starts, short runs and engine cut-offs while still at full thermal load: that is exactly the Berlingo's typical usage profile, and it is precisely that profile which wears a turbo out far faster than on a saloon cruising on a motorway. Oil that takes time to build pressure on start-up, high exhaust temperatures under sustained load, progressive carbon build-up — the classic symptoms are a sharp whistling noise under acceleration, persistent white or blue smoke, or a noticeable loss of pick-up. Before any replacement, identifying and correcting the root cause (oil quality, feed circuit, clogged EGR or DPF) is essential: fitting a new turbo without resolving the original fault will simply reproduce the failure.

Diesel: from the 1.4 HDi to the 2.0 HDi — clearly distinct engine families

The Berlingo diesel spans four engine families. The 1.4 HDi (engine code DV4TD) is the oldest and most compact. The 1.6 HDi comes in two distinct configurations: 75 and 90 hp with engine codes DV6ATED4 and DV6B, then 90 and 110 hp with engine codes 9HJ, 9HP, 9HS, 9HV, 9HX, 9HZ — these two groups of engine codes do not share the same turbo references, even at the same power output on the 90 hp version. The 2.0 HDi 90 (engine codes DW10TD and RHY) belongs to a generation predating the 1.6, with a different turbo architecture. Finally, the 1.5 BlueHDi comes in two variants: 75/100/102 hp (engine codes DV5RD and DV5RE) and 131 hp (engine code YHZ / DV5RC) — these two BlueHDi variants are not fitted with the same variable-geometry turbo.

Petrol: the 1.2 PureTech and THP — multiple engine codes for the same engine capacity

The turbocharged petrol Berlingo is based on the 1.2 unit, available under several engine codes depending on the generation and power output. The 1.2 PureTech / THP 110-130 hp may carry the engine codes HB2DT, HB2DTS or HNZ, whilst another configuration of the 1.2 PureTech 110-130 hp uses the engine codes HNP, HNS, HNV. On this engine, the turbo is a fixed-geometry unit with a wastegate; oil circuit contamination and repeated cold starts — common in urban commercial use — are the main causes of CHRA and bearing failure. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable way to identify the correct reference: engine capacity alone is not sufficient.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Citroën Berlingo Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Citroën Berlingo Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
