Nissan uses the same 1.5 dCi across seven different models, but the engine codes are not the same

This is the key pitfall with Nissan engines: an identical engine capacity can cover four or five distinct, mutually incompatible engine codes. On the 1.5 dCi alone, the range includes K9K codes running from K9K704 to K9K896, each corresponding to a specific generation, power output or emissions standard.

The right approach is therefore to start from the engine code stamped on the block, not the engine capacity or the model. A 2008 Qashqai 1.5 dCi and a 2013 Note 1.5 dCi do not necessarily take the same block, even if the commercial label is identical.

Three diesel block families for radically different uses

The range covers 88 bare engines spread across thirteen models, from 1988 to 2019. Three families make up the bulk of the catalogue. The K9K (1.5 dCi) family fits light vehicles — Qashqai, Note, Juke, Micra, Pulsar — and accounts for the majority of enquiries. The M9R / R9M (2.0 dCi and 1.6 dCi) family covers SUVs and crossovers: X-Trail, Qashqai, Juke, Pathfinder. The M9T (2.3 dCi) family is reserved for the NV400 and Primastar light commercials, vehicles subject to high thermal and mileage demands.

Petrol blocks are fewer in number but cover two distinct architectures: the HR12DDT / HR13DDT (1.2 DIG-T, direct-injection turbocharged engine for the Juke and Note) and the HRA2DDT (1.3 DIG-T, a more recent generation). These direct-turbo engines are sensitive to oil pressure and deposits in the intake circuit; accurate identification of the engine code remains essential before placing any order.

NV400, Primastar, Cabstar: light commercials require a different diagnostic approach

On light commercial vehicles — NV400 (M9T), Primastar (2.5 dCi, code ZD30DDTI or 2.3 dCi), Cabstar (3.0 dCi) — engine failure is often linked to chronic overheating or a cooling circuit fault that was not addressed beforehand. Replacing the bare engine without resolving the root cause will lead to a rapid recurrence. These blocks are available on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of the customer's own unit, subject to availability; the two sales methods do not apply to the same references.

For older models such as the Patrol (RD28T, ZD30DDTI) or the Navara (YD25DDTI), blocks are harder to come by: rebuilding the customer's original unit may be the only viable option, depending on the condition of the block supplied.
