Four engine codes, three gearbox families: the reliability weak points of the Touran 2.0 TDI

On the Touran 2.0 TDI produced between 2003 and 2015, four engine codes coexist — BKD, AZV, BMM and CFHC — and each has a different reliability history on the transmission side. The 6-speed manual, the most common in the early years, is prone to synchroniser wear on the lower gears and sump leaks — symptoms that typically appear between 180,000 and 220,000 km on BKD and AZV units. The DSG 6 (DQ250), fitted to certain mid-range versions, has a well-documented history of juddering in urban driving and mechatronic unit overheating — a point to address separately, as the gearbox is supplied without the mechatronic unit. The DSG 7 (DQ200), paired mainly with the CFHC, suffers from shudder on pull-away and slip when cold, weaknesses that are well documented across the entire VAG group for this dry-clutch gearbox.

Identify the exact gearbox before placing any order

A 2008 Touran 2.0 TDI may have been fitted with either a manual or a DSG 6, depending on power output and trim level: the engine code stamped on the block is not enough to determine which gearbox was originally fitted. The gearbox code, visible on the transmission identification plate, is the only reliable reference to avoid any mismatching error. References such as MSU, UFS, PBF or NGC, for example, correspond to distinct assemblies that are not interchangeable with one another, even at the same power output.
