Reconditioned Dacia Duster Gearbox

Duster 2010–2020: 5-speed or 6-speed gearbox, and when to rebuild your own rather than swap it on an exchange basis

On the first- and second-generation Duster, two families of manual gearbox are found depending on the engine. The 1.6 petrol (K4M) and the 1.0 SCe (H4D) come with a 5-speed gearbox; the 1.2 TCe (H5F) and the majority of 1.5 dCi (K9K) units are fitted with a 6-speed. The 1.5 dCi is the exception: depending on the exact engine code — K9K856, K9K858, K9K874, K9K894 or K9K898 — it may take either, which makes checking the engine code essential before placing any order.

Exchange or rebuild: what makes the Duster a different proposition

The Duster is frequently used in demanding conditions — off-road tracks, heavy loads, four-wheel drive under strain — which accelerates wear on the gearbox synchromesh rings and bearings. For a vehicle that is otherwise in good overall condition but has a gearbox that has failed on its own, rebuilding the original unit can make real sense: the gearbox of a well-maintained Duster often has a sound casing and clutch housing, and returning that reconditioned unit eliminates any doubt over cross-generation compatibility. An exchange unit is the right choice when the original is too badly damaged or unavailable for rebuilding.

TL and JR references: two families, one identification logic

The references in this collection belong to two families: the TL (5-speed gearboxes, e.g. TL4043, TL4075, TL4361) and the JR (6-speed gearboxes, e.g. JR5083, JR5189, JR5316). These references are not interchangeable between 5-speed and 6-speed units, nor necessarily between engine codes within the same engine capacity. The engine code stamped on the block and the vehicle's year of manufacture remain the two pieces of information to cross-reference in order to identify the correct gearbox for a Duster produced between 2010 and 2020.
