Duster petrol or diesel, 5 or 6 speeds: two replacement approaches that don't work the same way

The choice between an exchange gearbox and rebuilding your own unit is not straightforward on the Duster. For diesel gearboxes, the range is broader: the 1.5 dCi covers two distinct families — the 5-speed manual from the early years and the 6-speed manual introduced later — with five engine codes (K9K856, K9K858, K9K874, K9K894, K9K898) that do not necessarily share the same gearbox. Rebuilding the original unit makes sense when the gearbox presented is in a recoverable condition and the exact model is difficult to find on an exchange basis — which is often the case with less common series or low-volume variants.

Petrol: four engine codes, two gearbox architectures

On the petrol side, the picture is more fragmented. The naturally aspirated 1.6 — engine codes K4M 606, K4M 690, K4M 842, K4M 896 — is paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual. The 1.2 TCe, introduced later, moves to a 6-speed manual with engine codes H5F, H5F404, H5F408, H5F410. These two families are not interchangeable, even if the vehicle is a Duster of the same generation. The 1.0 SCe 100, engine code H4D, is fitted with a 5-speed manual specific to that engine.

Identifying the right part: engine code takes priority over year

Over the 2010–2020 period, the Duster evolved without its powertrains following a uniform timeline. The same year of first registration can correspond to several engine codes depending on the specification and market. The engine code stamped on the block — not just the engine capacity — is the only reliable criterion for determining which gearbox is compatible.
