Sandero: 7 engine variants, one 6-speed manual gearbox — how do you find the right one?

On the Dacia Sandero from 2008 to the present day, every engine variant is fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox, with one exception: the 1.0 TCe (engine codes H4Bt400 and H4B400), which comes with a 6-speed manual. This single difference in architecture already determines how the part must be identified. For the seven engine variants covered here — 1.5 dCi, 1.2, 1.0 TCe, 1.4, 1.0, 0.9 TCe and 1.6 — the engine code stamped on the block is the key identification criterion and must always be cross-referenced with the year of manufacture, as several codes exist within the same engine capacity: the 1.5 dCi alone covers variants K9K 792, K9K 612 and K9K 626, which do not all take the same gearbox.

Diesel or petrol: two entirely separate gearbox families

On the diesel side, the 1.5 dCi (K9K) accounts for the vast majority of fitments. The gearboxes paired with this engine are specific to it and cannot be substituted for those used on petrol variants, even where the number of ratios is the same. On the petrol side, the B4D, D4F, K7M, K4M, K7J and H4B families span very different generations of the Sandero: a gearbox from a Sandero 1.4 K7J 710 is not compatible with the same engine capacity in K7J 714 form. The year of manufacture and the exact engine code always take precedence over the stated engine capacity.

When does rebuilding your own unit make sense?

For this range, the only option available is exchange. Rebuilding the customer's own original unit — where the part sent in is reconditioned and then returned to its owner — can make sense for references that have become hard to find, or for gearboxes whose chassis number is tied to a claims history; this service is not available here, but remains an option worth considering if the reference you need cannot be found in the current catalogue. In all cases, quoting the full engine code rather than just the engine capacity is the only way to avoid ordering the wrong part.
