Sandero diesel or petrol: eight engine codes, two families with nothing in common

This guide covers the Sandero produced from 2008 to 2026 and is split into two families that share no mechanical components whatsoever. On the diesel side, six variants of the K9K block follow one another: K9K612, K9K724, K9K802, K9K808, K9K820 and K9K892. All share the same 1.5 dCi engine capacity, but each suffix corresponds to a distinct evolution in the cylinder head, engine management or emissions standards. Ordering on the basis of "1.5 dCi" alone, without checking the exact engine code suffix, is the most common source of error on this model.

K9K: six suffixes, six different parts

Reading the code stamped directly on the block is essential. The earliest Sanderos (2008–2012) were fitted primarily with the K9K612 and K9K724 suffixes; subsequent generations introduced K9K802, K9K808, then K9K820 and K9K892 as successive emissions updates were applied. A K9K892 block intended for a post-2017 Sandero cannot be substituted for a K9K802 from the first Stepway, even if the external appearance is similar. Confusing adjacent suffixes is the most frequent pitfall with this range.

H4B and H4D: the petrol blocks not to mix up

The 0.9 TCe is based on the H4B_408 code, a three-cylinder turbocharged unit introduced on the Sandero II. The 1.0 TCe that succeeded it carries the H4D_480 code — also a three-cylinder layout, but with a different internal geometry, crankshaft and engine management system: the two blocks are incompatible with each other despite the commercial continuity of the TCe name. Checking the code on the block before placing any order remains the only reliable approach, regardless of the engine variant.
