Duster diesel and Duster petrol: two engine code families, two identification logics

With the Duster, the first question to ask is not the engine capacity but the engine code stamped on the block. On the diesel side, the K9K family covers the entire 1.5 dCi production run from 2010 to 2024, but it encompasses a large number of variants: K9K724, K9K802, K9K808, K9K820, K9K856, K9K858, K9K892, K9K896, K9K628, K9K658, K9K666 — each corresponding to a specific power output (85, 90, 105, 110 or 115 hp) and a precise production period. Two closely numbered K9K codes do not necessarily refer to the same bare engine.

Petrol: H5F and H5H, two distinct blocks despite a similar appearance

The petrol Duster uses two different engine architectures depending on the generation. The 1.2 TCe (codes H5F_404 and H5F_410) is fitted to the facelifted first generation. The 1.3 TCe (codes H5H_470 and H5H_494) appears on the second generation from 2018 onwards. These two blocks share no internal parts whatsoever: H5F and H5H are distinct bare engines, and only the code can confirm that the part on offer matches the vehicle. The 1.3 TCe H5H is notably known for premature timing issues on certain versions — a point worth checking before placing any order.

How to use the codes to navigate the range

The engine code is found on the casing — on the gearbox side for K9K units, and on the timing side for H5F and H5H units. It is this code — not the model year or the stated power output — that determines the exact reference of the reconditioned bare engine. A 110 hp diesel Duster may carry a K9K856 or a K9K896 depending on the production period: the two references are not interchangeable. The range covers all the codes listed above for model years 2010 to 2024.
