The K9K family covers twelve distinct codes here — K9K 628, 658, 724, 802, 808, 820, 858, 892, 896, 898, 856 and 666 — spread across both generations of the Duster (2010–2017 and 2017–2018). A single model year may correspond to several codes depending on the market, the rated output (85 hp, 90 hp or 110 hp) and injection revisions. Checking the physical code stamped on the engine is therefore essential before placing any order.

When having your own unit rebuilt makes sense

Two purchase options are available for this engine: supply of a reconditioned unit on an exchange basis (your old unit must be returned), or rebuilding the unit you already own. This second option is the right choice when your K9K is a rare variant (low-volume codes or specific markets) that is hard to source on an exchange basis, or when traceability of the original part matters — particularly for a vehicle still subject to strict documentation requirements. It involves sending us your own unit and waiting for it to be returned once the work has been completed.

Key points to watch with the K9K on the Duster

The K9K is well known for its sensitivity to EGR valve fouling and diesel particulate filter clogging in short urban use — two issues that repeatedly subject the engine to thermal stress. On the 110 hp versions (notably the K9K 896 and 898), the variable-geometry turbocharger is a separate component from the bare engine: it is not included with the unit supplied. Checking its condition independently before fitting avoids an incomplete diagnosis after the engine has been replaced.
