Duster 1.5 dCi: 5-speed or 6-speed gearbox — two families that cannot replace one another

On the Duster 1.5 dCi produced between 2010 and 2018, two manual gearboxes were fitted as standard: a 5-speed and a 6-speed, and the two cannot be substituted for one another. The split depends on both the year of manufacture and the engine code: five K9K codes are documented across this range (K9K856, K9K858, K9K874, K9K894, K9K898), and it is their precise identification that determines the compatible gearbox reference. A 2013 Duster and a 2016 Duster with the same 1.5 dCi may carry different gearboxes.

When to opt for rebuilding your own gearbox

This collection is available on an exchange basis only. Rebuilding the customer's own unit — where the customer's gearbox is returned reconditioned — is not available within this range. This is worth knowing before starting the process: if the gearbox currently fitted would be excluded from an exchange due to its condition, this should be checked beforehand. The 5-speed gearboxes on the Duster 1.5 dCi are known for synchromesh wear, particularly on the lower gears — a symptom that often appears well before any outright mechanical failure, making an exchange a viable option at an early stage.
