Five engine codes for the Corolla: why it makes all the difference when choosing a gearbox

The Toyota Corolla spans nearly twenty years of production (2000–2019) and features five distinct engine codes — 4ZZ-FE, 1ZZ-FE, 3ZZ-FE, 2ZR-FE, 1ZR-FE on the petrol side, 1CD-FTV, 1AD-FTV, 1ND-TV on the diesel side. These engine codes do not share the same gearbox: a 1.8 Corolla from the E120 generation (1ZZ-FE) and a 1.8 from the E140/E150 generation (2ZR-FE or 1ZR-FE) use mechanically incompatible transmissions. The engine code, readable on the block, is therefore the primary identification criterion — even before engine capacity or year.

5 or 6 speeds depending on the diesel engine

All petrol engines (1.4, 1.6, 1.8) are paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 1.4 D-4D diesel (1ND-TV) follows the same pattern. However, the 2.0 D-4D (1AD-FTV) is the only engine in this range that also comes with a 6-speed manual: if your vehicle is fitted with this gearbox, the references are not compatible with those of the 5-speed version of the same engine. Always check the number of speeds before ordering — it is a common mistake on this model.

Rebuild or exchange: when to choose one over the other

Both purchasing options are available on this collection. Exchange suits situations where the gearbox is clearly identified and the corresponding unit is in stock. Rebuilding your own gearbox makes more sense in two cases: when the exact reference is hard to come by — which can happen with certain less common diesel variants such as the 1.4 D-4D — or when the gearbox has suffered partial damage and the casing or ancillary components specific to the vehicle are worth retaining. In this case, your own unit is reconditioned and returned to you, removing any uncertainty over compatibility.
