Six engine codes across two engine capacities: the evolution of the Toyota Proace gearbox from 2016 to 2024

The Toyota Proace, on sale since 2016, is built on a shared PSA platform — which explains the variety of engine codes found behind two diesel capacities that appear, on the surface, quite similar. The 1.6 D-4D is available with DV6FC and DV6FD, whilst the 2.0 D-4D covers four distinct codes: DW10FC, DW10FD, DW10FE and DW10CD. These successive updates reflect changes to emissions standards and engine calibration, but also mechanically different gearbox variants — a crucial detail to ensure you order the correct unit.

1.6 D-4D and 2.0 D-4D: two distinct transmission architectures

Engine capacity directly determines the number of gears: the 1.6 D-4D comes with a 5-speed manual, whilst the 2.0 D-4D gets a 6-speed manual. These two families are not mechanically interchangeable, even when the bodywork is identical. The engine code, visible on the block itself, is the essential reference for confirming compatibility before placing any order — two Proace vans from the same model year can carry gearboxes with different ratios and architectures depending on the engine fitted.

Durability: key points to watch on these gearboxes

On heavy-duty commercial vehicles such as the Proace, this generation of PSA manual gearboxes is prone to premature wear of the 3rd-gear synchromesh on 5-speed versions, particularly in stop-start urban use. The 2.0 D-4D in 6-speed form is generally less demanding on the synchromesh, but input shaft bearings can develop excessive play beyond 200,000 km. Common symptoms include stiff or notchy gear changes, a rumbling noise in gear, or difficulty holding neutral. The exact engine code determines which reference is correct from the six codes covered over the 2016–2024 period.
