Proace diesel: 5-speed gearbox on the 1.6 D-4D, 6-speed gearbox on the 2.0 D-4D

A light commercial vehicle like the Proace endures repeated load cycles, daily cold starts and, depending on professional use, high annual mileages. This takes a direct toll on the gearbox: gear changes under load, towing, and short urban runs at sustained engine speeds all accelerate internal wear. When replacement becomes necessary, the first essential check is the engine capacity, because the 1.6 D-4D and the 2.0 D-4D do not share the same gearbox: five speeds for one, six for the other.

1.6 D-4D and 2.0 D-4D: two distinct gearbox configurations

The 1.6 D-4D (engine codes DV6FC, DV6FD) is fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 2.0 D-4D (engine codes DW10CD, DW10FC, DW10FD, DW10FE) is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. These two families are mechanically incompatible: a 6-speed gearbox from a 2.0 cannot under any circumstances be fitted behind a 1.6, and vice versa. On a vehicle from 2016 to 2024, checking the engine code stamped on the block before placing any order is the only way to avoid a misidentification.

Identifying the correct gearbox from the engine code

The DW10 family covers several variants (DW10CD, DW10FC, DW10FD, DW10FE), which may correspond to slightly different axle ratios or torque figures depending on the year and configuration of the Proace. Likewise, DV6FC and DV6FD denote two versions of the 1.6. The engine code — readable on the identification plate or stamped directly on the block — is the decisive factor here: it determines the exact reference of the compatible gearbox, regardless of the model year or body variant.
