1KD-FTV or 1HD-FTE: two engine codes, two generations of Land Cruiser, two different gearboxes

The engine code is the first filter to apply here. The 1KD-FTV is fitted to the Land Cruiser 3.0 D-4D produced up to 2015 and can take, depending on the year and variant, either a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed manual — two distinct, non-interchangeable gearboxes that account for the bulk of the catalogue within this range. The 1HD-FTE, a 4.2 TD unit found on earlier versions from 1998 onwards, is paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual specific to that engine. Mixing up the two gearbox families is the most common mistake: the same number of ratios does not mean the same part.

1KD-FTV: why the same engine can require two different gearboxes

On the 3.0 D-4D, the switch from the 5-speed to the 6-speed gearbox took place during production. The vehicle's year of first registration and serial number are therefore critical for identifying the correct unit. Gearbox references such as 3303060A31, 330306A560 or 330306A620 illustrate the variety of variants listed for this engine alone. Checking the plate on the existing gearbox remains the most reliable way to avoid an ordering error.

Sales options depending on the condition of the original part

Two sales options are available within this collection. Exchange suits cases where the original gearbox is in a fit state to be returned. Rebuilding your own unit applies when the gearbox has suffered severe damage or has vehicle-specific fitment characteristics — a common situation with Land Cruisers used intensively or off-road. Both options are available for the 1KD-FTV; only the rebuild option is listed for the 1HD-FTE.
