    Three engines were fitted to the Yaris from 2005 to 2011: the 1.4 D-4D (1ND-TV) in diesel, and the 1.3 (2NZ-FE or 2SZ-FE) and 1.8 (2ZR-FE) in petrol. Not all of these engines use the same gearbox: the 1.4 D-4D can be fitted with a 5- or 6-speed manual, but also with the MultiMode, an automated manual gearbox with electro-hydraulic actuation and no clutch pedal. The 1.3 takes a 5- or 6-speed manual depending on the year and trim level; the 1.8 is available with a 5-speed manual only. The engine code stamped on the block — 1ND-TV, 2NZ-FE, 2SZ-FE or 2ZR-FE — is an essential check before placing any order, as two 1.3 engines can be paired with different gearboxes.

    When rebuilding your own gearbox makes the most sense

    The MultiMode on the 1.4 D-4D is the configuration where rebuilding your own unit is often the most appropriate solution: gearboxes of this type are less commonly available on an exchange basis, and retaining the vehicle's original unit makes it easier to trace the work carried out. The process is straightforward: your gearbox is collected, reconditioned, and returned to you fully restored — it is your own unit that comes back. For the 5- and 6-speed manuals on the 1.3 and 1.4 D-4D, both purchasing options are available, and the choice depends mainly on the availability of an exchange unit and the condition of the original gearbox.

    Key points to check by engine type

    On the 1.4 D-4D, the MultiMode is well known for faults related to the actuator and control wiring, but the mechanical gearbox itself also tends to suffer from advanced synchroniser wear, particularly on the higher ratios. On the 1.3, the existence of two distinct engine codes (2NZ-FE and 2SZ-FE) means it is essential to confirm which one is actually fitted to the vehicle: the internal dimensions and interfaces differ between the two blocks. The 1.8 with its 2ZR-FE remains the least common configuration in this generation of Yaris, with only one 5-speed manual gearbox listed.
