Yaris 2005–2011: the gearbox you need to replace is not the same before and after the first signs of wear

On this generation of Yaris, the symptoms that lead to gearbox replacement are well documented. The MultiMode — a single-clutch automated manual gearbox paired with the 1.3 — is the most vulnerable: premature actuator wear and jerky gear changes are recurring complaints from as early as 80,000–100,000 km. On the 1.4 D-4D (engine code 1ND-TV), the 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes more commonly suffer from faulty synchromesh rings — typically on 2nd and 3rd gear — with stiff, notchy changes when cold. These specific weak points directly determine which unit is affected and, crucially, which replacement is compatible.

Three engines, several configurations depending on the year

This guide covers four engine codes: 1ND-TV (1.4 D-4D diesel), 2NZ-FE and 2SZ-FE (1.3 petrol) and 2ZR-FE (1.8 petrol). The 1.4 D-4D is the most widely represented engine in the range and the only one to be fitted with either a 5-speed or 6-speed manual, or the MultiMode, depending on the year and the market. The 1.3 can also come with a 5- or 6-speed manual, and it is the engine code stamped on the block — not the engine capacity alone — that determines the compatible gearbox. The 1.8 (2ZR-FE) is only fitted with a 5-speed manual during this period.

MultiMode: a special case when it comes to identification

The MultiMode is a single-clutch automated manual gearbox, distinct from a conventional automatic gearbox. It is listed here without the robot actuator, which is a separate reference and must be dealt with independently. If your Yaris 1.3 is fitted with the MultiMode, make sure the diagnosis has clearly isolated the mechanical gearbox before placing any order: a faulty actuator is often the root cause, and replacing the gearbox without having ruled it out will not solve the problem.
