1.4 D-4D (1ND-TV): from the 5-speed to the 6-speed gearbox, the faults that lead to replacement

On the Yaris 1.4 D-4D from 2005 to 2011, the 1ND-TV engine was paired with three different transmissions depending on the year and trim level: a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual and the MultiMode — an automated manual gearbox with electronic control. An accurate diagnosis avoids replacing the wrong part.

Identify the correct version first

The 5-speed and 6-speed manual gearboxes are not mechanically interchangeable, and gearbox references differ according to the exact version of the vehicle. The first registration date alone is not sufficient: two Yaris 1.4 D-4D models from the same year may be fitted with different transmissions.
