All the gearboxes listed here are 6-speed manuals, whether diesel or petrol. This may seem to simplify selection, but the engine code stamped on the block remains the true identification criterion: a 1.7 CRDi with code D4FD or D4FDL, a 1.6 CRDi with code D4FE, a 2.0 CRDi with code D4EA or D4HA, a 1.6 petrol with code G4FD or G4FG. These engines cover the generations of Sportage produced between 2010 and 2022, and they do not share the same gearbox despite having an identical ratio architecture.

Exchange or rebuild: what guides the choice on a Sportage

Two purchasing options are available. Exchange suits situations where the gearbox is too badly damaged to be rebuilt to its original specification, or where vehicle downtime is a significant constraint. Rebuilding the customer's own unit makes sense for the rarer references — particularly the 2.0 CRDi D4EA from the early production runs — where exchange gearbox stock is more limited, or when the customer wishes to keep their own unit after reconditioning.

Key points by engine type

The 1.7 CRDi is the most widely represented engine in this collection, with three distinct references — a reflection of how the gearbox evolved across model years: a gearbox from a Sportage III (2010–2015) is not interchangeable with one from a Sportage IV (2016–2022), even with the same engine capacity. The 2.0 CRDi D4HA is fitted to the 4x4 versions aimed more at road use; its higher engine torque requires a gearbox dimensioned differently from the D4EA. Before placing any order, the reference number stamped on the casing of the existing gearbox will remove any doubt about compatibility.
