Over the Mokka's production life, Opel evolved the 1.4 Turbo through two prefix families — A14, then B14, then D14 — each available in a NET (direct injection) and NEL (indirect injection) version. The A14NET and A14NEL codes are fitted to the early models, B14NET and B14NEL correspond to a mid-life revision, while D14NET and D14NEL appear on the final model years. These six codes are not mechanically equivalent: the cylinder head, injection circuit and certain ancillaries differ depending on the prefix letter.

Before ordering a bare engine, the code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference — the same engine capacity does not distinguish between families. A well-known weakness of this block is the timing chain, which is prone to premature stretching; a reconditioned engine supplied without this fault is therefore a key selection criterion in its own right.
