i30 from 2007 to 2019: five speeds on the first generation, six on the second

The dividing line falls between the two generations of the i30. The 5-speed gearboxes are paired with the D4FB (1.6 CRDi) fitted to the first generation, sold from 2007, whereas the 6-speed gearboxes equip that same D4FB on the following generation, as well as the petrol engines — the G4FA (1.4) and the G3LC (1.0 T-GDI) — introduced from the second generation onwards. This boundary is the first thing to check before any identification.

Three engines, two fuel families

The 1.6 CRDi (D4FB) accounts for the vast majority of vehicles on the road and represents almost all of the references available in this collection. It can take either a 5- or 6-speed gearbox depending on the generation of the vehicle: the two are not interchangeable, and the year of first registration is not always enough to determine which — the engine code D4FB is shared across both generations, so the year must be cross-referenced with the type of original gearbox. On the petrol side, the 1.4 G4FA is exclusively paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox, as is the 1.0 T-GDI G3LC, which appeared later and was produced through to 2019.

Key points for identification

On the 1.6 CRDi, a single engine code (D4FB) covers two different gearbox types: checking the number of speeds on the vehicle's original gearbox is essential. For the petrol engines, the G4FA and the G3LC each have only one gearbox listed in the catalogue, which makes identification straightforward. Two reconditioning options are available depending on the unit: exchange reconditioned gearbox, or rebuild of the customer's own unit returned to its owner — the two options do not cover the same references.
