Are IVECO Daily turbos all diesel, and what does that actually mean in practice?

The answer is yes: every engine covered here is diesel. There are no petrol units, no simple fixed-geometry turbos with a light wastegate of the kind found on small turbocharged petrol light commercial engines. The Daily and 35C run working engines — 2.3 l, 2.5 l, 2.8 l and 3.0 l — subjected to severe thermal cycles, high loads and sustained engine speeds. That calls for turbos sized to handle intake pressures and exhaust gas temperatures well above anything a comparable petrol engine produces. Variable geometry (VGT) is very much present on the more recent F1A and F1C generations, whereas the older 8140 engines tended to use fixed-geometry turbos with a wastegate.

Two engine families, engine codes that never overlap

Identifying the exact engine code is the critical step. The 8140 (2.3 TD, 2.5 TD, 2.8 TD/TDI) engines cover the generations that predate the Multijet: you find codes such as 8140.23, 8140.43, 8140.27.2700 or 8140.43S.4000, variants that do not necessarily share the same turbo despite having an identical engine capacity. The F1A (2.3 D Multijet, 95 to 156 hp) and F1C (3.0 HPI, HPT, D, 145 to 205 hp) engines make up the modern generation: the codes F1AE0481, F1AE3481, F1AFL411, F1CE0481 or F1CGL411 vary according to power output and injection generation. A 2.3 D 116 hp and a 2.3 D 136 hp can have distinct engine codes with different turbos: checking the code stamped on the block — not just the engine capacity or the stated power output — is essential.

Causes of failure and points to check before replacement

On these heavily worked diesel engines, turbo failure is rarely an isolated event. The most common causes are insufficient lubrication (degraded oil, a clogged oil circuit, too long a delay before starting or after switching off), fouling of the variable geometry on VGT units — particularly susceptible on F1A and F1C engines used in urban driving or with a blocked DPF — and ingestion of a foreign body. Classic symptoms include blue or black smoke, abnormal whistling, progressive loss of power, and the engine going into limp mode. Addressing the root cause before replacement is essential: fitting a new turbo to an engine whose oil circuit has not been cleaned, or whose EGR remains clogged, is simply scheduling the next failure. All turbos listed here are new, sold direct with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your IVECO.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my IVECO?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
