Twingo 1.2, 1.6, 0.9 TCe or 1.0: standard manual or Quickshift?

On the Twingo, virtually every engine variant comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox — this applies to the 1.2 (engine codes D7F and D4F), the 1.6 (K4M, K4M854), the 0.9 TCe (H4B) and the 1.0 (H4D400). The only alternative is the Quickshift, an automated manual gearbox offered exclusively on certain 1.2 versions, which shares the casing of a 5-speed manual but incorporates an actuator mechanism. It is supplied without that actuator: the mechanical internals are fully rebuilt, but the electronics are not included.

Several gearboxes for the 1.2 alone: correct identification is essential

The 1.2 accounts for the vast majority of references in our catalogue — eight variants listed — compared with just one for each of the other engine capacities. This is explained by the engine's long production run on the Twingo (1993 to 2014) and by successive changes to the unit: D7F then D4F, with different final-drive ratios and casings depending on the model year. References JB1518, JB1521, JB1525 and JB1996 are not interchangeable: each corresponds to a specific configuration. The engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point, supplemented where possible by the original gearbox number.

Quickshift: common symptoms and pitfalls

The Quickshift is frequently blamed for juddering in town driving, refusal to change gear, or stalling on start-up. These symptoms can stem from the actuator (electrohydraulic unit) or from the mechanical gearbox itself — forks, synchros. Before placing any order, a targeted diagnostic is the best way to distinguish between the two causes. If the fault is mechanical, a rebuilt gearbox will resolve the problem; if it is purely electronic, the mechanical unit alone will not be sufficient.
