MINI: 3 transmission types across 25 engine codes listed from 2001 to 2023

The MINI catalogue covers two parts families — engines and gearboxes — and three distinct transmission architectures: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and DSG 7. The split is significant: manuals dominate on the R50/R56 generations (W10, N12, N14, N16 units), while the DSG 7 appears on Cooper and Countryman models from the B-series units onwards (B38, B47, B48). On the engine side, the dividing line is petrol/diesel: petrol covers the 1.4i, 1.5i Turbo, 1.6i and 2.0i, diesel covers the 1.5d, 1.6d and 2.0d. Each engine family has its own codes and its own well-documented weaknesses.

Manuals and DSG 7: what changes depending on the engine unit

The GS5 (5-speed) and GS6 (6-speed) manual gearboxes are not interchangeable between the Prince-generation units (EP6, N16) and the B-series units. The internal reference — for example GS5-52BG or GS6-58BG — varies according to the torque transmitted and the associated engine code. The DSG 7, fitted to more recent engines, is supplied without the mechatronic unit and with a new dual-clutch assembly: this is an important point to check before placing any order if the mechatronic unit is the cause of the fault on your vehicle.

MINI Engines: 25 codes covering the 2001–2023 range

Twenty distinct engine codes are active in the collection, with additional suffix variants (N12B16A, N12B16BA, N12-B16A) corresponding to different stages of development — power output, emissions compliance, and market specification. On the W10B16 and W11B16A units (first-generation R50/R52/R53), timing chain and oil pressure issues are well documented. The N14B16A units (Cooper S R56) are known for timing chain failures and head gasket faults. The third-generation B38 and B47 units present a different reliability profile. The code stamped on the block remains the only reliable identifier for ordering the correct bare engine.
