Reconditioned Skoda Octavia Gearbox

The engine code stamped on the Octavia block determines the compatible gearbox, not the engine capacity

On the Octavia (2004–2020), several engine codes share the same quoted engine capacity yet take different gearboxes. In 1.9 TDI, the codes AGR, ALH, ASV, ATD, AXR, BXE, BLS correspond to 5-speed manuals, whilst the codes BKC and BMM can be paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed DSG. In 1.6 TDI, the codes CAYC, CLHA and CRKB open up two distinct families: 5-speed manual or 7-speed DSG. In 2.0 TDI, the codes BKD, CEGA, CFHC, CLCB, CRLB and CUNA are spread across three possible transmissions — 6-speed manual, DSG 6 or DSG 7. Engine capacity alone is never enough to order the correct part.

TSI and petrol codes: clearly separate gearbox families

On the petrol side, the same logic applies. The 1.4 TSI under codes CAXA and CAXC takes a 6-speed manual. The 1.2 TSI (CBZA, CBZB) and the 1.5 TSI (DADA, DPCA) are also on a 6-speed manual. The 2.0 TSI (CCZA, CCZB) is exclusively paired with the DSG 6. The naturally aspirated 1.6 (BGU, BSE, BSF) takes a 5-speed manual. As for the 1.4 TSI code CJZA and the 2.0 TDI code CHHB and CJXC, their gearboxes cannot be substituted for those of earlier codes of the same engine capacity.

DSG 6 and DSG 7: a critical distinction not to be confused

The Octavia uses two generations of dual-clutch gearbox that have no mechanical relationship with one another. The DSG 6 (DQ250) is a wet-clutch gearbox, fitted to the 1.9 TDI, the 2.0 TDI and the 2.0 TSI. The DSG 7 (DQ200) is a dry-clutch gearbox, fitted to the 1.6 TDI and certain 2.0 TDI variants. Both gearboxes are sold without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch assembly included. A misread engine code can lead to ordering a DSG 6 instead of a DSG 7: the casings, gear ratios and electronic interfaces are incompatible.
