The different gearbox models of the Audi A4

First and foremost, identify which model of gearbox you own. The Audi A4 has a very long career, the first version dating back to 1994, it is indeed imperative not to make a mistake.

Let's start with the Essence models. In older models, if you own a 1.6 Gasoline vehicle, the smallest engine on the model, and your manual transmission is a 5-speed, then it has one of the following logos: ENQ, GBS, GFP, GBK, CTD or HFC. If, on the other hand, you have a 1.8 Gasoline, there are several possibilities. If it's a 5-speed manual transmission, its acronym will be HFD or FTW. If, on the other hand, it's a 6-speed, then your gearbox is an HES or GEA.

On the other hand, if you own a Quattro model, Audi's famous 4-wheel drive transmission, then you have a 5-speed gearbox called FPT or GDU. And if it's a Quattro with Turbo, developing 190 HP, then your Gearbox has 6 gears and is a GDZ or HER.

Next, let's move on to the 2.0 Gasoline model. Here it's simpler, the oldest models, before 2000, are 5-speed manual gearboxes, called GZN or FTX, while the post-2000 models are still 5-speed and have no acronym. In the most powerful engines, the 2.4 V6 Gasoline was delivered with a single 5-speed gearbox, the GBL. So there is no risk of making a mistake. Finally, for the most powerful engine of the older generations, the 3.0 Gasoline, a 5-speed version exists, the FJU, while four 6-speed manual gearboxes are out, the GBD, GBS, GJU or GVC. Don't hesitate to use the vehicle's logbook or manual to make sure you make the right choice.

Let's now move on to the most recent engines, still in petrol, the famous TFSI. For the smallest of the range, the 1.4 TFSI, 5 gearboxes have existed over the years, the JJF, NCT, MVQ, LLV and, for the last one, a 6-speed KVT. All of these transmissions are manual. As for the engine above in the range, the 2.0 TFSI, there was a KNU model, then a KBZ model before 2008, and then an LLS model from 2009 to 2012. For the Quattro models, there were two possibilities, LSB or KCA, while for the Avant, station wagon models, the gearbox had 5 gears and was called HFB, GFU or GBN .

Last but not least, the 3.0 TFSI is the most powerful petrol engine in the range. It's only available with the Quattro finish and has been fitted with an LPE gearbox.

Let's move on to Diesel, the well-known TDIs. The 1.9 TDI, the oldest in the range, has been fitted with no less than 15 different gearboxes over the years. If your manual gearbox has 5 gears, then you probably have a GYA, HFA, GBR or FEC gearbox. If you have 5 gears and the 130 HP version of the 1.9 TDI then the gearbox is a GBQ. As for the 6 speed gearboxes, they are called JWS, HCK, HFA or HCF, FYA and GBA. If you then chose a specific transmission, then the gearbox is not the same. For a Quattro, the model will be an EHW or DJJ, while for the 4-Motion, the gearbox is a FEL. Finally, if you have a station wagon, Avant, then your gearbox will be an ENW or a GFM...

As for the 2.0 TDI, which is also very popular, it has the same gearboxes as the 1.9 TDI, except for the MVS, a 6-speed gearbox equipped before 2008, and the KWT, which equipped the Quattro and had 6 speeds. For a Quattro, it is possible that your model is a NEK, NEL, NFM, LSE, QXM or LSA gearbox, depending on its year. And if you have the most powerful version, developing 170 HP, then it will be a GYH gearbox. In short, you will have understood it, the choice is plethoric and don't hesitate to trust the instructions or to ask your mechanic in case of doubt.

As for the 2.5 TDI, it has been equipped over the generations with 5 manual gearbox models, the EVN, HEN, HSL, GHA and GAZ, as well as a model for the Quattro, the ENV, and a model for the Avant, the FRG. Finally, as for the 3.0 TDI, available only in Quattro, four transmissions were in the mix: JMJ, HVE, JMG and GVB. It's up to you to find your model.

Finally, the Audi A4 was of course available, and still is, with an automatic transmission called Multitronic, which was first released in 1999. This continuously variable automatic transmission combines the economy of a manual transmission with the comfort of a car transmission and has been a great success throughout the life of this model.

How to change the Audi A4 sound box

Audi labour is expensive, very expensive. Faced with the estimate you have in your hands, you may consider doing the repair yourself, or even the change. Bad idea! Indeed, this operation is very technical and requires skills, and tools, that only an approved garage will possess. Moreover, for a multitronic box, you will have to go through the reprogramming box, which is also very complicated. By going through a professional, you will have the certainty of a job well done and, in any case, a guarantee that will give you confidence and serenity!

There are several ways to repair or change your audi a4 gearbox:

- The standard exchange: your gearbox is broken, or very badly worn, and it would be useless to replace it. So you might as well start with a new gearbox, 0 km, and 12 months warranty. Of course, this is only worth the cost in the case of a recent or very high-end car.

- The opportunity: in this case, it is a gearbox that comes from another vehicle, so it will already have been driven... On the other hand, it is the least expensive operation and you have the transparency of the mileage travelled and a 3-month guarantee, all the same!

- Reconditioning: last solution, if you can't find a replacement box, you can have your original box rebuilt, identical and like new. In this case, you will have to disassemble the box, empty it, and send it to a company that is an expert in the field, such as EDEN BOITES. The gearbox will then be completely cleaned, rebuilt, tested, and returned to you as new, with 0 km and a 12-month warranty, just like a standard exchange, but cheaper.

Whatever your choice, the best solution is to go directly to a specialist to get your new gearbox and have it delivered to your garage where it will be installed and mounted. Indeed, if you place the order yourself, you avoid a margin that the garage will apply as an intermediary, and you can then pay him for what he really has the added value for, labour! A substantial saving in perspective!
