Kia Soul: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair
Kia Soul: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair Kia Soul: Gearbox Maintenance and Repair

The Kia Soul has always stood apart: it combines the interior space of an MPV, the footprint of a city car, and the ride height of an SUV, making it one of the most spacious urban crossovers on the market. From its launch in 2008 to the present day, it has gone through three generations without losing any of its identity. That evolution doesn't rule out the risk of mechanical problems, however — particularly with the transmission. EDEN BOITES shares its expert advice on how to maintain and repair the gearbox in your Kia.

Which gearboxes does the Kia Soul use?

The range has changed considerably across the generations:

  • the first generation offered two petrol engines producing between 126 and 140 bhp and a diesel producing 128 bhp, paired with either a 5- or 6-speed manual or a 4- or 6-speed automatic;
  • in 2013, the line-up gained a 1.6 T-GDI petrol unit producing 204 bhp and a 136 bhp diesel, the latter fitted with a 7-speed automatic;
  • in 2014, the electric version arrived, equipped with a single-speed automatic gearbox;
  • from 2019 onwards, a single 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 150 bhp is paired with a continuously variable automatic gearbox.

Each configuration has its own characteristics: number of ratios, gear arrangement, and mounting type. Compatibility is therefore essential when ordering a part. To help you find your way around, our guide on manual and automatic gearboxes covers everything you need to know.

Recognising common faults

Kia gearboxes have a reputation for being robust, but heavy use will eventually take its toll. Certain warning signs should not be ignored: difficulty selecting gears, grinding or clunking noises, fluid leaks, a slipping clutch, excessive vibration, or a loss of power. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult a qualified mechanic without delay.

Keeping on top of gearbox maintenance

Regular servicing prevents costly breakdowns. Follow the oil change intervals recommended by Kia, check the oil level periodically using only the specified lubricant, drive smoothly, and carry out any software updates or repairs flagged by the manufacturer without delay.

Which repair option is right for you?

The best solution depends on the nature and severity of the fault. A minor repair — such as replacing a seal or a linkage component — is sometimes all that's needed to get the gearbox back in service. Where wear is significant or the damage is irreversible, replacement becomes necessary: an exchange or second-hand gearbox compatible with your Soul can then take over. Finally, if your transmission requires a full overhaul, reconditioning — which involves stripping it down, cleaning it, and replacing every worn part — restores your own gearbox to as-new condition.

Getting your gearbox order right

With three generations and such a wide variety of transmissions — from manual to continuously variable, including electric — the Soul demands careful checking before any purchase. Start by identifying the generation and engine of your vehicle, then locate the gearbox reference, which is usually stamped on the casing. This code ensures that the part you order will be a perfect fit, both in terms of mounting points and control electronics. An incorrect reference will delay your repair: if in any doubt, our advisers will confirm compatibility with you before the order is placed.

Frequently asked questions

Does the single-speed electric gearbox need servicing?

It requires less attention than a conventional gearbox, but regular checks are still recommended to ensure it continues to function correctly.

How do I choose the right gearbox for my Soul?

By checking the generation, engine, and part reference. Our advisers confirm compatibility before any purchase is made.

Can a minor repair be enough?

Yes — a seal leak or a linkage issue can often be resolved quickly. Only irreversible damage makes replacement necessary.

Does reconditioning apply to my own gearbox?

Exactly. Your transmission is stripped down and rebuilt using original parts, then returned to you in as-new condition.
