The Audi gearbox has a well-earned reputation for robustness, but no transmission lasts for ever. Across the entire Audi range, from the A1 to large saloons and SUVs, aggressive driving, an impact or irregular servicing can all lead to failure. This general guide covers the different types of Audi gearbox, the warning signs common to the brand, and the benefits of the exchange option, whatever your model.

The different types of Audi gearbox

The four-ring brand offers its transmissions in several families. Identifying yours correctly is the first step before any repair, as references are not interchangeable between models or even between engine variants.

  • Manual gearboxes: Audi models have been widely fitted with 5-speed and then 6-speed manuals. The current Audi A3, for example, comes as standard with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
  • S Tronic dual-clutch: available with 6 or 7 ratios, it delivers very rapid gear changes by pre-selecting the next gear.
  • Multitronic: a continuously variable automatic gearbox, offered notably on the Audi A4.
  • Tiptronic: a conventional automatic gearbox with up to 8 ratios, allowing manual intervention.

With Audi, the exact reference depends heavily on the generation and the engine. The Audi A3 8P (2003–2012), for instance, was fitted depending on the variant with a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, or 6- and 7-speed automated gearboxes, while the A4 has seen 5-speed manuals, 6-speed manuals, CVT, Multitronic and Tiptronic across successive generations. To understand what sets these technologies apart, read our guide on the differences between manual and automatic gearboxes.

Symptoms of a failing Audi gearbox

Regardless of the model or gearbox type, certain warning signs appear across the entire Audi range:

  • A persistent, unusual noise during gear changes.
  • Oil traces or leaks beneath the vehicle.
  • The transmission warning light illuminating or flashing.
  • A burning smell noticed inside the cabin.
  • Gears jumping or refusing to engage.

As soon as any of these symptoms appear on your Audi, it is strongly advisable to have a diagnostic carried out without delay: the earlier a gearbox fault is caught, the simpler the solutions available.

Repair or replace an Audi gearbox?

Repairing an Audi gearbox is a technical operation that requires a precise diagnosis. As assembly configurations vary from one reference to another, it is essential to entrust the work to a qualified professional: a mechanic, a dealer-approved workshop, or a service centre.

An oil change can sometimes be enough to eliminate certain noises or resistance when the lubricant is at fault. However, mechanical damage, a faulty sensor or an electronic fault will require more substantial work. When repair is no longer a viable option, exchange replacement becomes the most reliable solution. You can order the gearbox yourself from our range of gearboxes and leave only the fitting to your mechanic, keeping full control of your budget.

The Audi exchange gearbox

Our solutions cover the entire Audi range. Depending on your needs, several options are available:

  • A used Audi gearbox, inspected before sale, for moderate use.
  • An Audi exchange gearbox, fully reconditioned, ideal for intensive use.
  • Reconditioning of your own gearbox when the reference is no longer available: it is completely rebuilt in our workshops.

Frequently asked questions about the Audi gearbox

Are all Audi gearboxes compatible across models?

No. The reference depends on the model, the generation and the engine. An A3 gearbox will not fit an A4, even if the technology is the same.

Which Audi gearbox should I choose for my usage?

For occasional use, an inspected used gearbox is suitable; for regular or intensive use, the exchange option remains the best balance of reliability and value.

My Audi reference is not in stock — what should I do?

Reconditioning allows your own gearbox to be completely rebuilt in our workshops, even for rare or older references.
