1.4 T-Jet: a city car in everyday use, Abarth in hard use — two very different realities that place very different demands on the turbo

The 1.4 T-Jet powers vehicles used in very different ways: the Fiat Grande Punto and Fiat Bravo in 120 or 135 hp form are driven mainly in urban and suburban conditions, with incomplete warm-up phases and frequent hot-engine shutdowns — conditions that gradually degrade turbo lubrication. At the other end of the scale, the Abarth Grande Punto and 160 hp variants are often driven more dynamically, subjecting a performance-oriented turbo to repeated thermal stress. This pattern of use has a direct bearing on how the turbo fails and how urgently it needs replacing.

Several power outputs, several engine codes: the key point to watch when identifying the right part

The main pitfall with this engine is that the engine code does not simply follow the power output. The code 198 A1.000 appears under both the 135/150/160 hp and the 155 hp entries, meaning that the same code can correspond to different turbo references depending on the exact version of the vehicle. The code 199A8000 and the code 199 A8.000 refer to distinct entries in the catalogue (155/180 hp on one side, 16V Turbo on the other): confusing the two can lead to an incorrect OEM reference. The codes 198 A4.000 and 940 B7.000 are specific to the 120 hp version. The OEM reference stamped on the turbo currently fitted, and ideally the engine code on the block itself, remain the only reliable starting points for identification.

Failure causes and symptoms on the T-Jet

On this petrol engine, turbo failures most commonly stem from degraded oil or a clogged oil circuit, made worse by repeated hot engine shutdowns without a cooling-down phase. The most frequent signs are a whistling noise under acceleration, persistent blue smoke, and a noticeable drop in power even at low revs. On Abarth versions, an air leak upstream of the compressor can produce similar symptoms without the turbo itself being at fault. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and correct the root cause — oil quality and pressure, hose integrity — so as not to compromise the service life of the new turbo. All turbos offered in this collection are brand-new turbos, sold with no old unit to return.
