What the 4x4 warning light means
The four-wheel-drive warning light — sometimes accompanied by the ABS and brake warning lights — indicates that the 4x4 system has detected a fault and has often deactivated itself, leaving the vehicle running in two-wheel drive. On 4x4 vehicles with an electronically controlled transfer case, the most common cause is well established.
Likely causes
- The transfer case control motor (actuator). On several models, a small internal pinion wears out and the actuator can no longer control the transfer case correctly. It can be replaced on its own, at a fraction of the cost of a transfer case.
- A sensor or the wiring: wheel speed sensors, position sensor.
- Tyres of different diameters, interpreted by the system as permanent wheel slip.
- The transfer case itself, but only once the above points have been checked.
Can you keep driving?
Yes, in most cases, in two-wheel drive — but take care on slippery surfaces and off-road. If the warning light is accompanied by noises, clunking or juddering, have the vehicle checked promptly.
Repair or replace?
The actuator, sensors, wiring and tyres can all be addressed without replacing the transfer case. If the transfer case itself is confirmed as the problem (internal clutch, chain, pinions), a reconditioned transfer case on an exchange basis is the lasting solution. Please note: it is supplied without its electronics — your original actuator simply bolts back on.
