The mechatronic unit: the brain of the DSG
On a DSG or S tronic gearbox, the mechatronic unit combines the control module and the hydraulic block into a single assembly. It manages the pressure of both clutches and controls gear changes. On the 7-speed dry-clutch DSG (DQ200), it is the component most commonly responsible for gearbox faults.
Typical symptoms
- Harsh juddering at low speed, when manoeuvring in a car park, or when pulling away on a hill.
- A jolt when changing from 1st to 2nd gear.
- The gear indicator or "PRNDS" display flashing on the dashboard.
- Limp-home mode: certain gears become unavailable.
- In severe cases, the car refuses to move.

Repair or replace?
A mechatronic unit can be repaired or exchanged on its own, without replacing the gearbox; a software update is sometimes enough to resolve minor symptoms. If the gearbox itself is worn, a reconditioned DSG gearbox is supplied with a brand-new dual-clutch, tested and warranted for up to 24 months. Your original mechatronic unit is refitted to it: it must be in good condition or repaired before installation.
