Sprinter Gearbox: from the OM602 to the OM651, twenty-three years of technical shifts that make identification tricky

The classic trap with the Sprinter: two vehicles both badged 2.2 CDI, same power output, same body style, yet separated by a few years of production — and their gearboxes are different. Between 1995 and 2018, Mercedes successively introduced four families of diesel engines (OM602, OM611, OM646, OM651 on the 2.2 CDI side; OM642 on the 3.0 CDI side), and the gearbox pairings changed with each transition. A Sprinter 2.2 CDI can come with a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual depending on whether the engine is an OM611, an OM646 or an OM651. The engine code stamped on the block is therefore the only reliable starting point — even before the year of manufacture.

Engine families and their associated gearboxes

The 2.3 CDI (OM602.980, OM602.981, OM602.989) fitted the earliest versions of the Sprinter W901–W905 through to the late 1990s, and was paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual. The 2.9 CDI, another derivative of the OM602 line, follows the same logic — 5 speeds, no alternative. It is with the move to the 2.2 CDI OM611 and then OM646 that both gearbox types coexist on the Sprinter. The OM651 (codes 651.955, 651.956, 651.957), which equips the Sprinter from the W906 facelift onwards and on the W907, shifts to the 6-speed in the majority of configurations. The 3.0 CDI OM642 (OM642.896, OM642.993) is, without exception, paired with a 6-speed manual.

Common symptoms on Sprinter gearboxes

The 5-speed gearboxes from the OM602 and OM611 generations are well known for premature wear of the synchroniser rings on 2nd and 3rd gear, which take a particular hammering in heavy urban use. On the 6-speed units fitted to the OM646 and OM651, reported issues lean more towards selector fork wear and input shaft bearing failure, often noticeable as a dull rumble when cold in gear, or difficulty engaging a higher ratio under load. These symptoms deteriorate rapidly if the gearbox oil has not been changed at the recommended intervals — which is common on high-mileage light commercial vehicles.
