Swift 1.3 or 1.2, M13A or K12B: two generations, one 5-speed gearbox – but not the same parts

Every petrol Swift from 2005 to 2017 comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox, yet behind this apparent uniformity lie distinct assemblies depending on the generation and engine code. The M13A (1.3) covers the bulk of the fleet up to around 2010, while the K12B and the K12C (1.2) take over on later generations. The M16A (1.6) remains a niche fitment, limited to Sport versions. Engine codes are the primary identification criterion: a gearbox from an M13A is not interchangeable with one from a K12B, despite the similar engine capacity.

When to opt for reconditioning your own gearbox

Two purchasing options are available within this collection. For gearboxes from the more recent generations (the K12C in particular), compatible second-hand units can be scarce on the used market: sending your own gearbox away for reconditioning removes that availability issue and preserves the vehicle's exact history. For the more widespread M13A, sourcing a reconditioned unit is generally more straightforward.

Key points to watch on the Swift 1.3 and its successors

The M13A gearbox has a well-documented field issue with the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros, particularly on high-mileage examples used mainly in urban driving. On the 1.2 K12B and K12C, the problem is less well documented, but identification remains tricky: the 1.2 designation covers two different engine codes depending on the vehicle generation. Checking the engine code stamped on the block – not just the engine capacity – is essential before placing any order to ensure genuine parts compatibility.
