25 engine codes referenced: manual gearboxes, DSG 7 and petrol-diesel engines for MINI from 2001 to 2023

The MINI catalogue is split between manual gearboxes — 5 or 6 speeds depending on the generation and engine — and a DSG 7, found in particular on recent Cooper S models. The DSG 7 is offered without mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch: this is a critical identification point before placing any order. On the manual side, the GS5-52BG and GS6-53DG cover 5 and 6 speeds respectively; they are not interchangeable across all engine variants, and the gearbox code stamped on the casing remains the identification reference to check first.

Petrol, diesel, three engine families

The engines span three generations of units. The earlier W10B16 and W11B16A (1.6 petrol of Chrysler-PSA origin, from 2001) gave way to the BMW-PSA units N12B16, N14B16, N16B16 and N18B16A, then to the current BMW architectures B38, B46A20A and B48A20A. On the diesel side, the 9HZ / DV6TED4 (PSA) is fitted to the 1.6d One D 90 hp and Cooper D 112 hp, while the N47C16A, N47C20A and the B47 family take over on the 2.0d Cooper D and Cooper SD. The same description "1.6 D" can therefore correspond to two entirely different engine designs depending on the year: the engine code stamped on the block is the only valid identification criterion.

Turbos: new or reconditioned depending on the engine

The nine turbo references in the catalogue cover both the EP6DTS / EP6CDTS units (1.6 petrol turbo Cooper S, John Cooper Works 211 hp) and the N47 and B47 diesels. The EP6 family petrol turbos are known for clogging issues linked to oil consumption; the N47 and B47 diesels are susceptible to bearing wear under intensive urban use. New or reconditioned turbo: both options are available depending on the reference — check at the time of selection.
