Why does the turbo fail on the Mercedes Vito 2.2 CDI?
On Mercedes Vito vans fitted with the OM646 engine, the turbocharger is put under considerable strain in commercial use, with short journeys and frequent stop-start driving that limits oil cooling. Insufficient lubrication, incorrect engine oil or overdue oil changes, along with a clogged air filter, encourage bearing fouling and failure of the variable geometry mechanism specific to this turbo. Hard acceleration without a warm-up period — common in heavily loaded commercial vehicles — also accelerates premature turbo wear.
New Turbo for Mercedes Vito 2.2 CDI
This new turbo is compatible with the VV19 reference, intended for the Mercedes Vito fitted with the 2.2 CDI diesel engine (engine capacity 2148 cm³). It covers the 2.2 CDI 109, 2.2 CDI 116 and 2.2 CDI 150 variants, associated with engine codes OM646.980, OM646.981 and OM646.982. Before placing an order, we recommend checking the exact reference on your old turbo to confirm compatibility with your vehicle.
Exchange Basis and Warranty on This Vito Turbo
This new turbo is sold on an exchange basis: in accordance with our Terms and Conditions, return of the old turbo is required. It is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted, so the van is not left off the road. The part carries a 12-month parts warranty, subject to fitting by a qualified professional. Payment can be spread over multiple instalments, in up to 10 instalments.
Fitting Advice for the Vito OM646
Before fitting this turbo to a Vito 2.2 CDI, check the condition of the oil circuit, the lubrication hoses and the air intake, as well as the intercooler, which may retain oil residue from a previous leak. Pre-lubricating the turbo with oil before the first start-up ensures correct bearing lubrication from the moment the engine is running. Checking the air filter and using the correct engine oil as specified for the OM646 engine will help extend the life of the new turbo.
