Volkswagen before and after 2003: two generations of powertrains, parts that cannot be substituted for one another

The technical break at Volkswagen is most clearly seen in the dates. Before 2003, the Golf, Polo and Transporter received engines and gearboxes from the A3 and A4 platforms — the 1.9 TDI with unit injectors, 4- and 5-speed manual gearboxes with specific bell housings, and engine codes such as AXD, AXE or BAY which cannot be substituted by any later reference. From the PQ35 platform onwards, and then MQB, the 2.0 TDI with common rail, the 1.4 TSI and the 2.0 TSI introduced entirely different architectures: new bell housings, new ratios, and new codes such as CFCA, CAXA, DJKA or DFGA. On the same model — the Golf or Touran, for example — the same engine capacity can correspond to two incompatible gearbox families depending on the year of manufacture.

Gearboxes, engines, turbos: three part families, very unequal volumes

Gearboxes make up the largest share of the Volkswagen catalogue, covering the Golf (by far the most represented model), the Transporter, Polo, Touran, Passat and Caddy, among others. The range includes 5- and 6-speed manuals, DSG 6 and DSG 7 — the latter sold without the mechatronic unit but with a new dual-clutch — and a number of Shiftmatic units. Bare engines cover mainly the 1.9 TDI, 2.0 TDI and 2.5 TDI diesel blocks as well as several TSI petrol units. New and reconditioned turbos complete the range across both petrol and diesel turbocharged engines. The period covered runs from 1981 to 2024, which includes rare models such as the Corrado and the LT.

When rebuilding your own unit is the right solution

Exchange covers the majority of common references — Golf, Polo and Transporter on the most widely fitted engines. However, certain gearboxes for the Scirocco, Amarok 2.0 TDI, Touareg or Sharan remain rare on an exchange basis: the pool of used units in circulation is simply too small to support a reliable exchange programme. This is precisely where rebuilding your own unit comes into its own: the vehicle's original part is reconditioned and returned to its owner, with no dependency on the availability of another unit. The engine code remains the essential starting point for determining which of the two options is right for you.
