From the 1.9 TDI to the 2.0 TDI 190 hp: which turbo for your Touran depending on the engine generation?

The answer comes down to two criteria: power output and, above all, the engine code, because the Touran evolved across two distinct TDI engine families that share no turbos whatsoever. The 1.9 TDI (codes BRU, BXF, BXJ, BKC, BLS, BXE) covers the 90, 100 and 105 hp versions, whilst the 2.0 TDI spans a range from 136 to 190 hp across several engine code generations with entirely different OEM references.

1.9 TDI and early 2.0 TDI generations: variable geometry, codes AZV to BKP

The codes AZV, BKD, BKP, BMA, BVE correspond to the 2.0 TDI 136 and 140 hp. These variable-geometry turbos operate with a pneumatic actuator; their OEM references (series 03G253… and 53039880…) are not compatible with those of the later engine families. The 1.9 TDI shares a similar architecture but with turbine dimensions specific to its engine capacity. A well-known issue on these engines: a blocked particulate filter and EGR build-up create back-pressure that accelerates bearing wear; a whistling noise under acceleration or persistent black smoke are the first warning signs not to ignore.

2.0 TDI 170/177 hp and 190 hp: CFFA to CZJA families, 03L and 04L references

The codes CFFA, CFFB, CFGB, CLLA, CLLB (170–177 hp) use turbos from the series 03L253… and 785448…. The most recent codes — DLUB, DDAA, DFCA, DFHA, CNHA, CZJA, DDDA, DESA, DETA — covering the 2.0 TDI 190 hp move to the series 04L253…, with variable geometry and an electronic actuator. These two sub-families are not interchangeable, even at similar power outputs. Before fitting a new turbo to any of these engines, it is essential to check the condition of the oil circuit and replace the filter if necessary: oil contaminated with particles, or a partially blocked oil feed pipe, remains the most common cause of turbo failure on these engines.
