Diesel TDCi, EcoBlue or petrol EcoBoost: which Ford engine really suits your needs?

The Ford range covers two distinct families: diesel engines (TDCi, then EcoBlue) and petrol engines (Ti-VCT and EcoBoost). This divide is about more than fuel type — it determines the internal architecture, the timing chain, the known weak points and, when replacement is needed, strict compatibility with the engine code. Across the models covered here, from 1998 to 2025, the same engine name can refer to several physically different units: the 1.8 TDCi in the Transit is not the same as the one in the Focus or the Tourneo, and a 1.5 TDCi from a Fiesta does not share its codes with the one in the C-Max or the EcoSport.

Diesel engines: TDCi and EcoBlue — generations with no direct equivalence

Diesel engines make up the majority of the catalogue: 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 and 3.2 TDCi, alongside the 2.0 and 1.5 EcoBlue units introduced on recent generations of the Transit, Focus and Kuga. The move from TDCi to EcoBlue is not a straightforward evolution — these are entirely different architectures, with engine codes that cannot be substituted for one another. The 2.4 TDCi and 3.2 TDCi units are exclusive to the Transit and Ranger in their commercial and towing configurations; their codes (YMF6, YMR6, PGFA, SFJP among others) vary according to power output and vehicle generation. The Transit's 2.2 TDCi also exists under several codes depending on the year and the power rating chosen by Ford. On passenger vehicles, the 1.8 TDCi (codes T1DA, UFDA, BLFB among others) is one of the most widespread but also one of the trickiest: several codes coexist within the same engine capacity depending on the exact model.

EcoBoost and Ti-VCT petrol engines: turbocharged or naturally aspirated, the codes are not interchangeable

On the petrol side, two distinct approaches coexist. The Ti-VCT units (1.25, 1.4, 2.0) are naturally aspirated, fitted to the Fiesta, Focus, C-Max and Galaxy; their codes (M1DA, M1JJ, M1JU, BC2X, XXGA…) vary by engine capacity and generation. The EcoBoost units (1.0 three-cylinder and 1.5 four-cylinder) are turbocharged and share a very different design: the front-mounted timing chain on the 1.0 EcoBoost is a well-known point to watch on this family. Codes SFCE, SFJP or M8MA on the EcoBoost side: checking the engine code stamped on the block before placing any order is essential, as two Fiestas or two Focuses from the same year may carry units that are not interchangeable. All engines in this catalogue are sold as bare units, on an exchange basis, without ancillaries.
