B46A20A, EP6DTS, N14B16C… which engine code matches which turbo on the MINI Cooper?

It is the engine code stamped on the block — not the quoted power output — that determines the exact turbo to order. On the MINI Cooper, the variety is genuine: two petrol families (the 1.6 turbo Prince EP6 and the 2.0 turbo B-series) and two diesel families (the 1.6 DV6 / 9HZ and the 2.0 B47), each with its own manufacturer references. The same commercial name — such as "Cooper D" — can cover engine code 9HZ / DV6TED4 or engine code N47C16A, depending on the generation of the vehicle: the turbos are not interchangeable between these two units.

Petrol: from the 1.6 Prince to the 2.0 B-series

The 1.6 Cooper S (EP6DTS / EP6CDTS) and the 1.6 John Cooper Works (N14B16C) share the same Prince architecture but do not use the same turbos: the JCW 211 hp features a specific fixed-geometry turbo with an actuator, distinct from the one fitted to the Cooper S. The 2.0 Cooper S (B46A20A / B48A20A), from a more recent generation, uses an entirely different wastegate turbo. On these petrol engines, common symptoms include an abnormal whistling noise, blue smoke under acceleration and a marked loss of power. Before any replacement, it is essential to check lubrication quality and the condition of the oil circuit: failure of the Prince turbo is often the result of oil degradation or a delay in oil pressure build-up at start-up.

Diesel: 1.6 DV6 and 2.0 B47 — two distinct generations

The 1.6 One D 90 hp and 1.6 Cooper D 112 hp (9HZ / DV6TED4) are fitted with a variable-geometry turbo; the manufacturer references (753420 series, 0375J…) differ according to power output, even at the same engine capacity. The Cooper D and Cooper SD 2.0 (B47C20A / B47C20B) as well as the 1.6 Cooper D 110 hp (N47C16A) belong to the BMW N47/B47 family, with turbos that are again specific to each engine code. On diesel engines, a clogged diesel particulate filter and EGR valve are among the leading causes of turbo failure: addressing these components before fitting the new turbo is essential.
