Why might the turbo on your MINI Cooper S 2.0 petrol fail?
On the turbocharged petrol engines fitted to the MINI Cooper S, the turbocharger is subjected to significant thermal and mechanical stress. Insufficient lubrication, the wrong engine oil, or oil that has not been changed at the correct intervals is a common cause of premature wear to the bearings and turbine shaft. A clogged air filter or a poorly maintained intake system can also allow abrasive particles to be ingested, while hard driving with sudden high-rev bursts and no engine cool-down period weakens the turbo's internal components. A blocked intercooler or a split hose can also disrupt air pressure and accelerate compressor fatigue.
