MINI petrol or diesel, 2001 or 2023: two technical eras that have almost nothing in common

The break is clear around 2013–2014, when MINI progressively dropped the Prince engines (developed with PSA) and the early BMW N-series in favour of a fully BMW architecture: the B38, B46, B47, B48. The same logic applies to gearboxes — the 5-speed manual gave way to the 6-speed, and the 7-speed DSG appeared on certain versions. Ordering a part without distinguishing between these two periods risks an immediate incompatibility.

Cooper and Countryman: the importance of the model in identification

The Cooper accounts for the vast majority of the catalogue, ahead of the Countryman and the Clubman. Engines, gearboxes and turbos are the three part families covered. On the 1.6 petrol, the variety of engine codes is particularly wide: W10B16, N12B16, N14B16A, N16B16, N18B16A and EP6CDTS are not interchangeable and correspond to distinct generations and performance levels — from the basic One to the John Cooper Works (N14B16C). The same care is needed on the 1.6 diesel: the 9HZ (DV6TED4) is a PSA engine, whereas the N47C16A is of BMW origin; the associated gearboxes differ accordingly.

The second-generation 2.0 engines: B47 and B48 depending on the application

From the third generation onwards, the 2.0 diesel is built around the codes B47C20A and B47C20B (Cooper D, Cooper SD, 2.0 SD), while the 2.0 petrol Cooper S 192 hp is based on the B46A20A or B48A20A. The 1.5i (B38A15A, B38A15M0) is fitted to the 3-cylinder Cooper from 2014 onwards. For turbos, the turbo reference is specific to each engine code: a turbo designed for the N14B16A does not fit the N18B16A, even though both are 1.6 Cooper S engines. The bare engine is sold without ancillaries; for the 7-speed DSG gearboxes, the mechatronic unit is not included, but the dual-clutch is new.

Identifying the correct code before filtering

The production range spans 2001 to 2023. Over that period, the same model — the Cooper, for example — received radically different engines depending on the year of first registration. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference for selecting the correct reconditioned gearbox or bare engine, regardless of the engine capacity shown on the registration document.

    Frequently asked questions

Are your MINI parts compatible with my model?

We cover the vast majority of MINI engines. To get the exact part, give us your number plate or request an online quote: our advisers confirm compatibility using your registration document.

    Are reconditioned MINI parts reliable?

Yes. Every MINI part is reconditioned in our workshop, with wear parts replaced, bench-tested and guaranteed for up to 24 months. A reliable and far more affordable alternative to new, starting from a restored original part.

How does the exchange system work for a MINI part?

You order your reconditioned MINI part, we dispatch it, then you send us back your old unit (the core). We arrange all the transport both ways — you don't have to handle any logistics.

Do you deliver MINI parts everywhere, and how quickly?

Yes, we deliver throughout France and Europe. Depending on the availability of the reference, your MINI part leaves our workshop quickly, and you can pay in instalments, up to 10 payments.
