Which engine code do you need to find the right MINI Cooper turbo?

The engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point: across the MINI Cooper range, the same commercial name can cover very different architectures depending on the generation. The 1.6 Cooper S is available with four codes — EP6CDTS, EP6DTS (PSA blocks, fixed-geometry with wastegate) and N14B16A, N18B16A (BMW blocks) — each requiring a different turbo reference. The 1.6 John Cooper Works 211 hp is based on the N14B16C, which is distinct from the N14B16A found in the standard Cooper S — confusing the two codes is the most common mistake with this engine.

Diesel: three code families, three distinct turbos

On the diesel side, the breakdown is equally strict. The 1.6 Cooper D 110 hp corresponds to codes 9HZ and DV6TED4 (PSA 1.6 HDi blocks), fitted with a variable-geometry turbo. The 1.6 One D 90 hp / Cooper D 112 hp uses the N47C16A, a BMW 1.6 diesel block that does not share its turbo reference with the PSA versions. Finally, the Cooper D and Cooper SD 2.0 diesel models are based on codes B47C20A and B47C20B, two variants of the same BMW 2.0 block whose actuators may differ depending on the suffix. The 2.0 Cooper S 192 hp petrol is based on B46A20A or B48A20A: here again, the suffix determines the exact reference.

Common symptoms and precautions before replacement

On PSA blocks (9HZ, DV6TED4, EP6CDTS, EP6DTS), a blocked diesel particulate filter or EGR valve is a frequent cause of turbo failure: whistling noises, blue or black smoke, and a drop in engine speed are the telltale signs. On BMW blocks (N14, N18, B46, B47, B48), bearing wear is often linked to oil quality and oil level. In every case, identifying and addressing the root cause of the failure before fitting a new turbo is essential to prevent a repeat failure. All turbos listed here are new, supplied with their manufacturer references and equivalent references, with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your MINI Cooper Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my MINI Cooper Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
