The right turbo for the Lancia Delta 2.0 Multijet

The Lancia Delta III wins favour for its comfortable motorway ride and family saloon character, often covering long stretches of dual carriageway as well as stop-start urban driving. This mix of conditions places considerable demands on the turbocharger of the 2.0 Multijet 165 ch engine, which must build boost pressure rapidly to deliver torque from low revs. In mixed use — with bursts of acceleration followed by sudden stops and no cooling-down period — the turbo can wear prematurely if maintenance is not kept up to the mark.

Compatibility of this new turbo for the Lancia Delta

This new turbo is compatible with reference 788290-5001S, intended for the Lancia Delta III fitted with the 2.0 Multijet 165 ch diesel engine of 1956 cm³. The relevant engine codes include 198 A5.000, 198 A8.000, 844 A2.000, 939 B5.000 and 940 A5.000. Before placing an order, we strongly recommend checking the reference stamped on the old turbo as well as the engine code shown on the vehicle's identification plate, to ensure a perfect match.

Exchange basis and warranty for your Delta

This new turbo is sold on an exchange basis: in accordance with our Terms and Conditions, return of the old turbo is required, but it is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted to your Lancia Delta, so your vehicle is never left off the road. The part carries a 12-month parts warranty, subject to fitting by a qualified professional. Payment can be spread over multiple instalments, in up to 10 instalments.

Symptoms, causes of failure and fitting advice

On the 2.0 Multijet, common signs of turbo failure include loss of power, blue or black exhaust smoke, an unusual whistling noise, or excessive oil consumption. The most frequent causes of damage are insufficient lubrication, poor-quality or overdue oil, a clogged air filter, or a split intercooler circuit. Aggressive driving — revving the engine hard then switching it off immediately — also accelerates bearing wear.

Before fitting, check the condition of the oil circuit, ensure the hoses are clean, and confirm there are no air intake leaks. When starting the engine for the first time, it is essential to prime the turbo with oil to ensure immediate bearing lubrication and prevent premature seizure.
