Ypsilon, Musa, Lybra or Thesis: what mechanical strain does daily use really place on the gearbox?

The answer depends on the vehicle's exact role. The Ypsilon is primarily a versatile city car whose 5-speed manual gearbox absorbs short, repeated clutch cycles typical of heavy urban use — it is precisely this pattern that wears the lower-gear synchromesh rings first. The Musa, positioned as a compact family MPV, is used more on mixed roads; its 5- or 6-speed gearboxes cover several distinct engine codes depending on the chosen engine, making correct identification essential before placing any order. The Lybra and Thesis, saloons designed for longer journeys and, in the case of the Thesis, representative duties, receive more powerful units — up to the 2.4 JTD — and 6-speed gearboxes sized accordingly, in a completely different league from those fitted to the city cars in the same range.

Identifying the right part: the engine code as the essential starting point

Across the Lancia range covered here (1999–2021), the same engine capacity can correspond to incompatible gearbox families. The 1.4 petrol is available in an 8v version (code 350A1000) and in 16v versions (843A1000, 199A2000, 199A3000); the associated gearboxes are not interchangeable. On the diesel side, the 1.3 Multijet (codes 188A9000, 198A2000) and the 1.6 Multijet (841C000) are fitted mainly to the Ypsilon and Musa across different production years. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable criterion for cross-referencing the engine, model and year, and for avoiding any ordering errors.

What the catalogue actually covers

The catalogue consists mainly of reconditioned gearboxes — 5-speed manuals, 6-speed manuals and the DFN automated manual gearbox fitted to certain versions of the Ypsilon — as well as one bare engine. The DFN (an automated manual gearbox with an electrohydraulic actuator) is offered without its actuator: the mechanical gearbox assembly is reconditioned, but the actuator is not included. All parts are available on an exchange basis only. The Delta also features in the catalogue with one engine option available, to be verified according to the version in question.
