Symptoms of a failing turbo on the Audi A4 3.0 TDI
On the Audi A4 (B9) fitted with the 3.0 TDI engine, a worn turbo often makes itself known through a loss of power under acceleration, an unusual whistling noise from the engine bay, blue or black exhaust smoke, and sometimes an engine warning light accompanied by the gearbox entering limp mode. Excessive engine oil consumption or a smell of burning oil when accelerating are also warning signs not to be ignored on this engine, which demands consistent boost pressure.

Exchange basis and warranty on this Audi A4 turbo
This turbo is sold on an exchange basis: in accordance with our Terms and Conditions, return of the old turbo is required, but it is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted, so your Audi A4 is never left off the road. A 12-month parts warranty applies, subject to fitting being carried out by a qualified professional. Payment can be spread over several instalments, in up to 10 instalments.
Fitting advice for the Audi A4 3.0 TDI turbo
- Check the condition of the oil circuit (pressure and cleanliness) before connecting the new turbo, as insufficient lubrication is one of the leading causes of premature failure.
- Inspect the oil feed and return hoses, as well as the air intake seal, to prevent any ingress of particles or oil leaks.
- Inspect and, if necessary, clean the intercooler and air filter, as a build-up of deposits accelerates turbocharger wear.
- Use the recommended oil grade and adhere to the correct service intervals, particularly on a diesel engine that is regularly driven hard.
- Prime the turbo with oil before the first start-up to ensure the bearings are lubricated immediately from the moment the engine fires.
