Symptoms of a failing turbo on a Mercedes Classe A 220 d
On a Mercedes Classe A fitted with the 220 d diesel engine, a weakening turbocharger typically shows itself as a noticeable loss of power under acceleration, an unusual whistling noise on the intake side, darker or bluish exhaust smoke, and the engine warning light coming on – sometimes accompanied by the vehicle entering limp mode. Excessive fuel consumption and hesitation on pick-up can also appear when boost pressure is no longer properly regulated.

It is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted, so that your vehicle is not left off the road. Fitting advice for the Classe A 220 d turbo
On this diesel engine, premature turbo failure is frequently caused by insufficient lubrication, the use of unsuitable engine oil or neglected oil changes, a clogged air filter, or a leak at the intercooler allowing contaminants through. Habitually switching the engine off immediately after sustained hard use also accelerates bearing wear.
Before fitting the new turbo, the oil circuit, hose condition and air intake should all be checked to rule out any residual contamination. When starting up for the first time, priming the turbo with oil is essential to ensure immediate lubrication of the bearings from the very first start.
