Classe A W176, W177 or W169: does the turbo change between generations?

Yes, significantly. The Classe A has gone through several generations, each fitted with distinct engine blocks that are incompatible with one another, with turbos carrying their own specific references. Identifying the correct part therefore requires knowing, at the very least, the engine code stamped on the block — not just the engine capacity or the quoted power output.

Diesel: four engine families, with no overlap in references

The diesel variants span several generations with clearly differentiated architectures. The 220 CDI is based on engine code OM 651.930; the 160 CDI 82 hp and 180 CDI 109 hp correspond to codes OM 640.940 and OM 640.942 — two distinct codes for two power outputs on the same base block, which is a frequent source of confusion. The 220 d 190/194 hp uses codes 654920 / OM654920. The 180 d can be fitted with either the K9K or the OM 608.915 depending on the production period. The same applies to the A 160 CDI / A 160 d and A 180 CDI / A 180 d: codes K9K or OM607 depending on the model year. For these engines where two codes are possible, only the physical engine code on the block will lead you to the correct turbo reference.

Petrol: M270, M282 — similar blocks but not interchangeable

The turbocharged petrol variants cover the 160, 180 and 200 (codes M 270.910 and M 282.914) as well as the 220 and 250 (code M 270.920). The M270 and M282 share a similar 4-cylinder architecture, but their turbos are not interchangeable: the manufacturer references differ. A failing turbo on these blocks typically makes itself known through a noticeable loss of power, a whistling sound under load, or the activation of limp mode. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and address the root cause — degraded oil, a clogged EGR or intake circuit, or a faulty oil hose seal — otherwise the new part will fail rapidly. All turbos listed on this page are brand-new turbos, sold as a straightforward purchase, with no old unit to return.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Mercedes A-Class Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Mercedes A-Class Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
