Why does the turbo on the Classe E fail so often, and what does that mean for replacement?

On the Classe E, turbo failure almost always follows the same pattern: oil circuit sludging, bearing degradation through lack of lubrication, or soot ingestion via a clogged EGR circuit or DPF. The tell-tale signs are progressive power loss, the engine dropping into limp mode, an abnormal whistling noise under acceleration, or blue-grey exhaust smoke. On the OM 642 diesel units (fitted to the 280 CDI, 320 CDI, 350 CDI and E 350 BlueTEC), the variable geometry is particularly prone to vane fouling — a well-known weak point across this engine family. On the M271 petrol units in the 200 CGI and 250 CGI, it is more often the CHRA oil seal integrity that is at fault. In every case, replacing the turbo without addressing the root cause of the failure is simply condemning the new part: flushing the oil circuit, replacing the filter, and checking the flow rate of the turbo feed pipe are non-negotiable prerequisites.

Diesel and petrol: two turbo families, very different references

The Classe E covers a wide range of engines, and turbos are not interchangeable between versions — even where the engine capacity is the same. On the diesel side, the OM 646 family is fitted to the 200 CDI and 220 CDI under several distinct codes (OM 646.951, OM 646.961, OM 646.962, OM 646.963, OM 646.966 on the W211/S211 side; OM 646.811, OM 646.812, OM 646.820, OM 646.821 on the W212 side), whilst the OM 612 is exclusive to the 270 CDI. The 280 CDI and 320 CDI share the OM 642 family, but the sub-codes (OM 642.920, OM 642.921) differ from those of the 350 CDI and E 350 BlueTEC (OM 642.850, OM 642.852, OM 642.854, OM 642.858). On the petrol side, the M271 units in the 200 CGI and 250 CGI, the M276 in the E 400, and the M278 in the E 500 and 500 each require their own manufacturer references. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to select the correct reference: the commercial designation (220 CDI, 350 CDI…) often covers several distinct engine codes associated with different turbos. The full range is available as a new turbo, sold as a straightforward replacement part.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Mercedes E-Class Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Mercedes E-Class Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
