The M47D20 is fitted to the early X3 E83 (2004–2007); the N47D20 takes over on the F25 generation on the diesel side, whilst the N46B20 corresponds to the 2.0 petrol version. The gearbox references GS6X37DZ and GS6X45DZ are not interchangeable between these families: the internal designation (TH6J, TH8J, THAY, THBJ, HRG…) encodes the final drive ratio and engine compatibility. Identifying the engine code — not just the engine capacity — is essential before placing any order.

Key points to watch on the 2.0d in heavy SUV use

The high torque of the 2.0d diesel, combined with the weight of the X3 and its all-wheel-drive system, accelerates wear on the primary shaft bearing and the selector forks. The most common symptoms are difficulty engaging 1st and 2nd gear when cold, followed by rumbling noises under load on the motorway. On the 2.0 petrol, the GS6X37DZ gearbox is rated for a lower torque output: any mix-up with a diesel reference results in direct mechanical incompatibility.
