5 diesel engine families, 5 distinct turbos: the recurring failures of the Boxer

On the Peugeot Boxer, the turbo is one of the most well-documented weak points, regardless of the generation. The 2.0 TD / HDi (DW10TD, DW10UTD) engines accumulate failures linked to insufficient lubrication on start-up — a direct consequence of degraded oil or missed service intervals. On the 2.8 HDi (RHV, S9W700, S9W702, codes 8140.43S and 8140.63), failures tend to affect the bearings and sump gasket sealing, compounded by inlet tract fouling — a common issue on a van subjected to frequent short urban cycles. In both cases, the symptoms are similar: blue or black exhaust smoke, whistling under load, and a marked drop in power. A failed turbo on these engines does not always give warning gradually: the failure can be sudden.

Newer engines: 2.0 BlueHDi and 2.3 BlueHDi / MJTD — a different picture

The 2.0 BlueHDi 110 and 130 (AHM, AHN, AHP — codes DW10FUE, DW10FUD, DW10FUC) and 2.3 BlueHDi 140 / MJTD 138 (F1AGL4113) generations are fitted with variable-geometry turbos whose actuator is sensitive to fouling of the turbine vanes — a problem made worse by a blocked or excessively delayed DPF regeneration. The resulting power loss is accompanied by the vehicle entering limp mode, which can be difficult to distinguish from an electronic fault without prior diagnostic work.

Identify the correct reference before ordering

Engine capacity alone is not enough: the same 2.0 HDi can take turbos with radically different manufacturer references depending on the exact engine code. This guide covers references such as 53039880061, 49135-05050, 877674-5004S, 53039880521 and 49377-07052, which are not interchangeable. Checking the engine code stamped on the block — not just the stated power output — is essential to avoid ordering the wrong part. All turbos listed here are new.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Peugeot Boxer Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Peugeot Boxer Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
