Turbo Skoda Fabia: before and after the switch to TSI, two generations of distinct weak points

On the Fabia, the nature of turbo failures has evolved alongside the engine range. The older diesel units — 1.9 TDI (ATD, AXR) and 1.4 TDI (AMF, BAY, BHC, BMS, BNM, BNV, BWB) — suffer primarily from the gradual build-up of carbon deposits in the oil galleries, made worse by extended service intervals or repeated short journeys. The typical symptom is a dull whistling noise accompanied by blue smoke on a cold start, indicating bearing wear caused by insufficient lubrication. On the more recent petrol versions — 1.2 TSI (CBZA, CBZB) and 1.4 TSI RS (CAVE) — failure tends to be more sudden: synthetic oil that is not changed within the required intervals degrades and loses its lubricating properties at high temperatures, rapidly attacking the CHRA. The 1.4 TSI RS 180 hp, given its higher operating demands, is particularly susceptible to this failure mode.

Identifying the correct reference by engine code

A single 1.4 TDI can correspond to several distinct manufacturer references depending on the exact engine code (AMF, BAY, BHC or BNM, among others) and the year of production: references 045253019D, 045253019G or 045253019L are not interchangeable without verification. The same logic applies to the 1.2 TSI, where references 03F145701F, 03F145701G or 03F145701M correspond to successive revisions of the same unit. The 1.2 TDI (CFWA) has its own reference (03P253019B), distinct from all other diesel engines in the range. Before placing any order, the engine code stamped on the block — and not simply the engine capacity — is the only reliable criterion.

Address the root cause before replacing the turbo

Fitting a new turbo without identifying the cause of the failure will invariably lead to a repeat breakdown. On TDI engines, the cleanliness of the oil supply circuit and the condition of the oil filter must be checked. On TSI engines, inspect the intake manifold for air leaks and ensure there are no foreign bodies upstream of the compressor. All turbos offered in this collection are new, with manufacturer references and cross-references available for each engine variant.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new or reconditioned, together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Skoda Fabia Turbo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Yes, the turbo is sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo once the new one has been delivered and fitted. We arrange the collection, so you have no logistics to handle.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Skoda Fabia Turbo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
