Reconditioned Volvo V70 Turbo

The turbo on the Volvo V70 almost always fails for the same reason

Petrol or diesel, the turbos on the V70 share a common weak point: a high susceptibility to lubrication breakdown. On the petrol units B5244T, B5254T and B5234T3 (2.4 T 193 hp and 2.3 T 237 hp) as well as the B4204T11 (2.0 T5), degraded oil or excessively long service intervals will ultimately destroy the CHRA bearings. The symptoms are clear: a whistling noise under acceleration, persistent blue smoke on cold starts, followed by a sharp drop in power. On these high-boost engines — the 2.3 T exceeds 237 hp as standard — failure is rapid once the bearings are worn. Before any replacement, it is essential to check the oil circuit for leaks and to verify the actual pressure at the pump outlet; failing to do so means a new turbo will suffer the same fate.

Diesel D5 and D3: two engine families, distinct references

On the diesel side, the V70 comes with two quite different engine families. The D5 (codes D5244T, D5244T2, D5244T5) is fitted to the 2.4 D and 2.4 D5: it is a five-cylinder unit with a variable-geometry turbo whose actuator and moving vanes are particularly prone to soot fouling, especially with intensive urban use or after a blocked DPF. The typical symptom is a limp-home mode with a gradual loss of power, sometimes with no visible smoke. The D3 (D5204T2, D5204T3) — available in 136 and 163 hp — is a four-cylinder of more recent design; its turbo references (795680-5003S, 805156-5006S among others) are not compatible with those of the D5 despite a similar engine capacity. Identifying the correct unit via the engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable way to select the right reference. Addressing the root cause — EGR circuit, DPF, oil quality and level — before fitting is imperative on these diesel engines.
