4-cylinder diesel: two distinct groups of codes

The 2.0 D3 / D4 (codes D5204T2, D5204T3, D5204T7) and the 2.0 D2 / D3 120-150 hp (codes D4204T8, D4204T13) represent two generations of Volvo 4-cylinder blocks with incompatible turbo references. Confusing a D5204 with a D4204 is a common mistake: the commercial designation "2.0 D3" appears on both, yet the engine codes differ. Checking the full code, including the suffix, is essential before placing any order.

Petrol: B5234T3, B5254T2 and the B4204T family

The 2.3 T (B5234T3) and the 2.5 T (B5254T2) are 5-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines with fixed-geometry turbos and a wastegate, offered as new units. The 2.0 T5 245 hp is based on a B4204T family with six variants (B4204T11, B4204T14, B4204T15, B4204T17, B4204T41, B4204T47): the numerical suffix distinguishes internal revisions featuring different CHRAs and actuators. On these petrol engines, insufficient lubrication or degraded oil remains the primary cause of bearing failure and turbo seal failure; addressing the root cause of the damage before replacement is essential to the service life of the new part.
